Deep Blue Sushi Zone-by-Zone Fish Guide

Every zone, every fish, every spawn — mapped.

Last updated:

Where you dive determines what you can catch. This page maps every ocean zone to the fish that can spawn there, the depth band where they appear, the equipment you need to safely reach them, and the exclusive catches you can only get by being in the right place. Use this as the map companion to the Fish Tier List (which ranks fish by value) and Ocean Exploration (which covers general diving).

Shallow Waters

The starting zone. Calm water, good visibility, no dangerous creatures except the occasional jellyfish. The first recipes you learn use exactly these fish.

What You Can Catch

  • Sardine — extremely common, sells for very little, but stacks fast. Used for Sardine Roll.
  • Common Mackerel — the foundation of your early income. Used for Mackerel Sushi.
  • Blue Tang — moderate value, big schools. Used for Blue Tang Nigiri.
  • Small Crab — solo target, slow movement. Used in ingredient mix-ins.
  • Anchovy — comes in pulses of 4–6 at dawn (in-game dawn, not Steam-clock dawn).
  • Jellyfish — catchable but bad value, sting causes a short stun. Used as a garnish in advanced recipes.

Spawn Patterns

Sardines, Mackerel, and Blue Tang respawn almost continuously. Jellyfish and Anchovies have a soft in-game day-cycle timing — dawn or dusk in-game.

Safe Path Out

The Shallow Waters dock ramp is the closest geo-marker to the surface; if you are lost, swim up and toward the dock light beam.

Tips

  • Build your first 12 dives around Mackerel + Blue Tang. Don’t go chasing Sardines unless you have unlocked Sardine Roll.
  • The Jellyfish stun is the most common cause of first-day lost catches. Walk around them, don’t harpoon them.

Mid-Depths

The mid-depths open after the oxygen-tank upgrade and the reinforced suit. Visibility drops, and piranhas start to appear near coral structures.

What You Can Catch

  • Red Snapper — used for Red Snapper Sashimi. Reliable value.
  • Sea Bream — used for Sea Bream Roll. Slightly harder to land than Red Snapper.
  • Moonfish — boundary spawn at the edge of the deep ocean. Used for Moonfish Special.
  • Piranha (hostile) — not a fish you cook. Counts as a creature, not an ingredient. See Dangerous Creatures.
  • Electric Eel (hostile) — also a creature. Drops Standard Eel Liver if killed.
  • Striped Marlin — fast predator-fish, used as a high-tier ingredient.

Spawn Patterns

  • Red Snapper: spawn in loose packs of 3–5 around rocks.
  • Sea Bream: solitary, usually near coral columns.
  • Moonfish: only appears at the deep-ocean boundary; pulls back into the deep if you scare the school.
  • Striped Marlin: rare spawn at any depth in the mid-depths; sprints away from harpoons.

Tips

  • The mid-depths is where your oxygen-tank upgrade pays back. Make sure your tank is at least Tier 3 before a long mid-depth run.
  • Piranhas spawn near coral. Going around the coral formations instead of through them is the safest pattern.
  • Striped Marlin aggroes from harpoon fire; use the diving net on a charged net-fishing approach, not a fast harpoon strike.

Deep Ocean

The deep ocean is the high-value late-game zone. Visibility is poor; oxygen is tight; the predators are bigger. Bring full Deep Dive Gear.

What You Can Catch

  • Deep Sea Bass — used for Deep Sea Bass Premium. The fish that drives your late-game economy.
  • Golden Tuna — used for Golden Tuna Deluxe. Rarest natural spawn in the launch build.
  • Striped Marlin (deep variant) — bigger, faster, sells higher than the mid-depth version.
  • Moonfish (deep variant) — bigger and slightly rarer than the mid-depth boundary spawn.
  • Boss-tier fauna — see Boss Creatures for the five current boss encounters.

Spawn Patterns

  • Deep Sea Bass: low-frequency, school of 1–3 at random; great circle path.
  • Golden Tuna: appears in the southern half of the deep ocean, often near rock formations; respawn timer between 5 and 8 minutes.
  • Striped Marlin (deep): solo, faster than the mid-depth version; one of the hardest fish to harpoon without advanced aim.
  • Standard electric fish roam the open deep-water — keep distance unless you want the stun.

Tips

  • Oxygen is the timer. Always calculate your return trip before you engage a fish.
  • The Deep Sea Harpoon is mandatory for the larger fish; the basic harpoon tickles them.
  • Don’t enter the deep ocean without at least one teammate backing up the surface line.

Hidden Reef (Mid-Depth Sub-Zone)

The Hidden Reef is a mini-zone that branches off the south side of the mid-depths. It contains the Coral Hydra boss and the Crystal Shrimp.

What You Can Catch

  • Crystal Shrimp — used for Crystal Shrimp Tempura Roll. One of the highest mid-game ingredients.
  • Coral Hydra (boss) — see the Boss Creatures page.
  • Standard mid-depth fauna in small numbers, including a small chance of Moonfish.

Spawn Patterns

  • Crystal Shrimp: small schools of 2–4 near coral heads; respawn every 4–6 minutes.
  • Coral Hydra boss: night cycle, every third service. Boss is dormant during the day.

Tips

  • The Hidden Reef path is a narrow canyon. Bring diving fins or the canyon becomes a two-dive trip.
  • Crystal Shrimp timer is shorter than most other fish — get them to the dock quickly to preserve quality.

The Trench (Deep-Ocean Sub-Zone)

The Trench is the south stretch of the deep ocean. It hosts the Abyssal Eel and the spawn territory of the Abyssal Squid.

What You Can Catch

  • Abyssal Eel (boss) — see Boss Creatures.
  • Abyssal Squid (boss) — see the same page.
  • Pearl (rare) — no recipe use, can be sold for a hefty cash bonus.
  • Standard deep-ocean fish in low density.

Spawn Patterns

  • Eel: in-game 18:00 to 21:00 only (evening service window).
  • Squid: appears after a sustained dive of 30 seconds or longer in the trench.

Tips

  • The Trench has poor oxygen economy. Plan for two-tank dives or a buddy on the surface.
  • Bring at least two divers; the trench is too much HP for solo boss runs.

How To Read Spawn Cues

Every fish gives off a tell when it is about to spawn in a zone:

  • Bioluminescence — a brief glow at the location, 3 seconds before the school appears.
  • Sound cue — audio signature, louder for rarer fish.
  • Bubble trail — only for fast fish like Marlin and Moonfish.

If you see the cue but not the fish, the spawn is queued. Wait at the spot for up to 5 seconds.

Cross-Zone Tips

  • Travel oxygen — your return trip through a zone costs the same oxygen as the approach.
  • Weather effects — the in-game weather can push fish toward shallower or deeper levels; check the weather bar before scheduling a deep dive.
  • Day cycle — Coral Hydra (night), Abyssal Eel (evening), Anchovy (dawn). Align your dive schedule with the in-game clock, not your wall clock.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Where do I get Crystal Shrimp?

Crystal Shrimp spawn in the Hidden Reef sub-zone, which is a side branch off the south side of the mid-depths. They appear in small schools near coral heads. The reef is the natural territory of the Coral Hydra boss, so bring a partner.

What is the rarest fish in the game?

Golden Tuna is the rarest natural spawn in the current build. It appears in the southern half of the deep ocean and has a 5–8 minute respawn timer. Bone Whale (a boss) is rarer but counts as a creature, not a fish.

Can I catch the same fish in multiple zones?

Some fish have variants by zone (Striped Marlin, Moonfish). The deep-ocean variants are larger and worth more but are also faster and harder to land. The recipe book only requires the standard variant.

What is the best zone for early-game money?

Shallow Waters. Stick to Mackerel, Blue Tang, and Sardine until your oxygen tank is upgraded. Then move into Mid-Depths for Red Snapper and Sea Bream. Skip the Deep Ocean until full Deep Dive Gear.

Where are pearls?

Pearls drop in The Trench from the Abyssal Eel and Abyssal Squid loot tables. They have no recipe use but sell for a hefty cash bonus.
